Loco Moco is traditionally made with white rice topped with a hamburger patty, fried egg and gravy. There are other variations of this dish, where they top the rice with sausages, ham, or chili instead of the burger patty.
Loco Moco (Hamburger over rice with caramelized onions and sunny side egg)
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons flour
¼ teaspoon salt
Dash of pepper
3 drops of Worcestershire sauce
½ cup beef broth
½ cup water
2 tablespoons red wine
1 tablespoon ketchup
⅛ teaspoon thyme
½ pound ground beef
¼ cup cheese garlic croutons, crushed
⅛ teaspoon dried marjoram leaves
Gravy: Melt butter on low heat and add a little flour at a time; stirring continuously to form a rue. Then add salt, pepper and brown. Next, add in a few drops of Worcestershire sauce. Gradually add in beef broth and water; stirring continuously. Cook until desired thickness. Then add in red wine, ketchup and thyme; stir. Set aside.
Patties: In a large mixing bowl, add ground beef, croutons and marjoram and combine together, then form large patties. Fry until done.
Combine: Layer cooked patties over rice, then fried egg, and pour gravy over.
