Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Medium Skillet (optional if you want to sauté mushrooms)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Rubber Spatula or Wooden Spoon
  • 9x13-inch Casserole Dish
  • Oven (preheated to 350°F)

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds frozen green beans thawed and patted dry
  • 1 can 10.5 oz cream of mushroom soup (or homemade if preferred)
  • ½ cup milk any type works
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce adds a subtle savory note
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms optional, for extra texture
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 ½ cups crispy fried onions divided; half for mixing, half for topping
  • Optional ¼ cup grated cheddar or parmesan (for a cheesy twist)

Instructions

  • Preheat Your Oven
  • Set the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Prepare the Sauce
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
  • If you’re adding fresh mushrooms, you can sauté them briefly in a medium skillet with a little oil or butter, then stir them into the sauce.
  • Mix in the Green Beans
  • Add the thawed frozen green beans to the sauce.
  • Stir in ½ cup of the crispy fried onions (this helps distribute flavor throughout).
  • Make sure the beans are coated evenly.
  • Assemble the Casserole
  • Lightly grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish.
  • Pour the green bean mixture into the dish, spreading it out evenly.
  • Bake
  • Place the casserole in the preheated oven.
  • Bake for about 25 minutes, or until it’s bubbling around the edges.
  • Add the Crispy Topping
  • Carefully remove the casserole from the oven.
  • Sprinkle the remaining fried onions on top. If you want a cheesy touch, add ¼ cup grated cheddar or parmesan before the fried onions.
  • Return the dish to the oven for an additional 5 minutes, just until the topping is golden and crunchy.
  • Serve and Enjoy
  • Let the casserole cool for a minute or two, then bring it to the table.
  • Serve warm and watch your guests dive in!

Tips & Tricks

  • Extra Creaminess: Swap the milk for half-and-half or heavy cream if you want a richer sauce.
  • Fresher Flavor: Use fresh green beans by blanching them for 3–4 minutes in boiling water, then proceed with the recipe.
  • Make Ahead: Assemble everything except the fried onion topping. Cover and refrigerate. Add the topping right before baking.
  • Sautéed Onions or Garlic: For more savory depth, sauté diced onions or garlic, then fold them into the mixture.
  • Cheesy Variation: Mix in a handful of shredded mozzarella or cheddar for a velvety twist.
